Eligibility: Who May Register To Vote

You may register and vote in Minnesota if you:

  • are a United States citizen
  • will be at least 18 years old on Election Day
  • have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding Election Day
  • maintain residence at the address given on the registration form
  • are not under court-ordered guardianship in which the court order revokes your right to vote
  • have not been found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote
  • have any felony conviction record discharged, expired or completed your sentence. *Applicants with a question on the status of a prior felony conviction should contact their probation officer to gain clarification and resolve their status question before completing a voter registration application.

Giving false information on your voter registration application is a felony punishable by not more than five years imprisonment or a fine of not more than $10,000, or both.

When to re-register

If you meet the eligibility requirements you may re-register to vote when you:

  • move within Minnesota since you last being registered
  • change your name since last being registered
  • have not voted at least once in the last 4 years

Voters will know their registration is processed when…

  • Newly registered voters receive a postcard from the elections office. The postcard tells the voters that they are registered and where they vote on Election Day.
